In 1999, the Greenwich High football team won its first state championship in eight years, beating Southington, 47-27. The following season, the Cards reached the state finals, falling to Shelton, 22-8.

In 2006, the Greenwich High football team won its first state championship in seven years, beating Southington, 28-7. Friday night in Greenwich, CT, the Cardinals two-way standout Jonathan Meyers put on a show in the 41-0 victory over Trumbull.

The 6-foot-1, 215 pound junior scored the Cardinals' first four touchdowns while running for 158 yards on 13 carries. He was just as tough on the other side of the ball, leaving the Golden Eagles remembering No.44 with many punishing hits. With the win, Greenwich moves up two spots in this week's poll.
